Voice and tone checklist for your online course

  |  5 min read

Each page in your online course and every communication you send to your students is a chance for you to set the tone, support discourse, and communicate your expectations. Together, they represent “you” to your students, and they will look to these pages to help keep them engaged and encouraged.

Here are some tips for effective course communication:

  • Understanding your audience – Consider your students’ experience level, familiarity with online learning, and background in the subject.
  • Use inclusive, student-centered language – Avoid assumptions, reflect a range of perspectives, and be mindful of clarity by limiting jargon or culturally specific phrases.
  • Connect course content to real-world or workplace applications – When possible, this helps students see its relevance and stay engaged.

Communication can also be used to actively support and encourage students. Regularly point them to available resources such as tutoring, advising, and counseling services and include clear ways to access that support. Reinforce that you are invested in their success by maintaining an encouraging tone and promoting a growth mindset, where challenges are part of the learning process. A quick final review of your content can ensure your message is clear, supportive, and aligned with the learning environment you want to create.
